Distance:9.6 miles Time: 6hr:46mins (inc. stops) Total ascent: 587m
With the weather set to relatively warm and dry, we planned a bigger afternoon of walking, setting from Grasmere around 11:30am to climb up to Helm Crag.
When I’d looked at Helm Crag from Silver How, the ascent looked very steep, but it was a relatively easy climb with stone steps on some of the sections. Once at the top, I climbed onto the southernmost rock outcrop for a photo!

The true summit rock “The Howitzer” to the north is impressive to behold, but I didn’t attempt to climb it. Instead, we descended slightly before resuming the climb to Gibson Knott

Our luck with the weather started to run out after this point, and we encountered intermittent drizzle as we continued to Calf Crag.
Once at Calf Crag we didn’t hang about for long as it was very windy, so we began the long descent back down the valley to Grasmere.

We had about 10 minutes of heavy rain as we started losing height, but this made the walk no less enjoyable, we encountered numerous waterfalls on way down.

This puts me on 18, and Sarah on 10 Wainwrights.
