Walk #19 Catbells and Maiden Moor

Distance:13 miles Time: 5hr (exc. stops) Total ascent: 799m

We had planned Blencathra, as the forecast was excellent, but the previous walk had taken its toll so we scaled back our ambitions. Our plan was to climb Catbells, and then possibly Maiden Moor and High Spy to follow.

We set off from the campsite down to Keswick and caught a ferry over to Hawes End. As it was Easter Sunday, the fell was absolutely heaving with people – this was the most people we’d ever seen while tackling any fell. Sarah did not enjoy some of the rockier scrambles, particularly the final climb to the summit.

Catbells summit, very busy with bank holiday visitors like us!

Happily, the crowds thinned after the summit, and the climb up to Maiden Moor was relatively easy by comparison. The summit was worth it, giving great views westwards and a good look back at the climb up to Catbells.

Maiden Moor, with Catbells in the midground, and Skiddaw / Blencathra in distance

Sarah didn’t want to push ahead to High Spy, so we’ve saved that for another day.

Maiden Moor

We retraced our steps back off Maiden Moor, descending to Brandelhow Bay down steep stone steps. Once there we took a ferry back to Keswick to seek out beer and dinner before the long trudge back up the hill to Castlerigg Hall campsite.

A glorious day’s walking all in all!

This brings our Wainwright totals to Sarah 23, Paul 41
