After visiting family in Penrith, we thought we’d do a few quick ‘drive bys’ on our way back to Ambleside. The first of these was Great Mell Fell.

There’s room for a few cars where a farm track meets the road, and the route up to the fell starts on the track. There are two paths which head off from the track. We took the first one which seemed to be the steeper and wetter of the two – I’d recommend skipping the first path, and making the ascent via the second path further up the track!

The climb itself is pleasant enough, leading through a wood of twisted trees before a gentle climb to the summit. You’re rewarded with excellent views of many near and distant peaks!

This took us an hour but was very enjoyable.

On getting back to the car, we took a short drive to the other side of Little Mell Fell.
