Walk#6 Black Fell

Reluctant to simply drive home after leaving our accommodation for the week, we decided we’d do one last Wainwright before hitting the road. Black Fell fit the bill perfectly – not too taxing, but still a good 3hr walk with great views.

We parked in the Silverthwaite car park just north of Skelwith Bridge. Crossing the road from there brings you onto a riverside walk which took us past Skelwith Force and through woodland before crossing the A593 and following a narrow road uphill before veering off onto a footpath through woodland.

I’d found the route on a trail app, but the footpath itself wasn’t on the OS map but appeared to be well used so can only assume it was a permissive route. Once out of the woods, it’s a fairly easy climb on grassland. Misreading my map, I thought we’d chanced upon the peak early before realising our mistake, but the view was still good.

We continued on, eventually reaching the trig point which had excellent views. Our final Wainwright of the week.

After a short rest, we followed a straightforward trail to complete our circuit, though one part of our route involved walking on the A593, it wasn’t very busy.

We returned to car and began the long trip home. Fantastic week – Sarah’s total was 5 Wainwrights, mine was 13.

We will return!
