Our lakes adventures began on 24th April 2022 – we had a planned a week’s break in Ambleside. Sarah wanted to give hillwalking a try, so we started small with Loughrigg Fell.

I had a route planned which would take us from Ambleside, up to Loughrigg, then back via the caves at Rydal.

On the way up the hill from Ambleside, we found ourselves among many others on their way to a fell running and orienteering event. Missing our intended turn, we followed the runners up to their start point. Not finding any marked trail from there, we explored the views from tops of the fell before following a more defined path to the trig point at the peak.

Despite Sarah finding some part of the climb difficult, she was hooked and Wainwright #1 was a success!

From the peak we descended towards Rydal and explored the caves before walking back towards Ambleside.

Sarah immediately purchased a map where she could tick off further Wainwrights. The game is afoot!
